Sources and conventions

Rutland is a tiny county that is usually treated as an appendage to Leicestershire in trade directories. It has had to fight for its existence over the years, and it lost its separate identity for a period after the local government reorganisation of the early 1970s. It has therefore seemed to me important that it should have its own studio directory, small though that is.

One Oakham photographer, John Burton, conducted his main operation in Leicester and had other branches elsewhere. All Rutland trade directory references to his out-of-county studios have been included in this listing, but his career can be traced in more detail in the Leicestershire studio directory.

The following conventions have been adopted for the ordering and presentation of entries:

Individuals are listed before any non-family partnerships that include them.

Partnerships appear under the names of both (or all) partners.

If a photographer embarked on more than one partnership, those partnerships are listed in alphabetical order of the partner who is not the focus of the entry.

Addresses are listed in order of their earliest appearance.

Imprecise addresses (those which name only the town/village, or those which give a street but no number) are recorded separately. They may, of course, refer to a studio listed more precisely elsewhere in that photographer’s entry.

Additional notes are set in italics.
