See also Leonard and Louis Norman, below. Earlier ‘L Norman’ entries would appear to refer to Louis and later entries to Leonard. The entries for 1913-1915 could refer to either.

NORMAN, Leonard

26 Tacket Street, Ipswich

KS1916

See also L Norman, above. David Gobbett gives his lifespan as 1864-1937, and reports that his son, John White Norman, also became a photographer at 2 The Walk, Ipswich. See also Brett Payne's notes on Leonard Norman.

OGLESBY, Samuel

Oglesby was an itinerant photographer who was active in the Eastern counties in the 1850s, as well as possibly working for a time in the North. Heathcote relates that he set up a temporary studio in Bury at some time between 1856 and 1858. He eventually settled in Llandudno in the 1860s.

PATLEY, Walter

12 St Matthew Street, Ipswich

SI1894

Believed to be a misprint for Walter Batley (q.v.).

PAYNE, Mr

He could be the same as Henry Payne, below. According to an advertisement found by David Gobbitt in the 'Bury and Norwich Post', 3rd December 1867, J W Clarke (q.v.) had just 'secured the services of Mr Payne, from Baker Street, London'.  The partnership of Clarke and Wallace having recently ended, Clarke was evidently in need of a further pair of experienced hands. No record has yet been found of Payne operating under his own name in London, so he had probably been working for someone else. (The most famous Baker Street studio, in business since 1863, was Elliott & Fry.)

PIPER, John Dixon

24 Silent Street, Ipswich

HS1864, KS1865

Listed under photographers, but described in both directories as ‘(landscape & architectural)’. According to a report found by David Gobbitt in 'The Ipswich Journal', Piper  was interested in photography from its earliest days. He became  the first president of the Ipswich Photographic Association in 1888,  and addressed its first monthly meeting on the history of photography.

POLL Brothers

93 High Street, Gorleston

KN1904, IDT1906/7

PORTER & Cann

Itinerants listed by Heathcote. They took a studio at 14 Corn Hill, Bury, from May to August 1854, and at Newmarket, address unknown, in August 1854.

Quay Street, Halesworth

WS1885

Station Road, Halesworth

WS1885

Described as shopkeeper as well as photographer in MS1868 and HS1873. The WS1885 entries are separate, so could be an indication of two practitioners rather than just one practitioner with two studios.

PORTER, Joseph

Low Street, Hoxne

KS1912, KS1916

He is described as ‘corn chandler, flour dealer and photographer’ in MS1868 and appears as G(eorge) Rayner junior until 1874.  The 30-year gap between 1874 and 1904 may well be an indication of  two practitioners.

REED, William

Reed has not been found in trade directories, but (according to LJ/IR) he ran a studio at 2 Pier Terrace, Lowestoft, before it was taken over by William Bevan in 1874.

REEVE, William Hastings

High Street, Saxmundham

MS1868, KS1869, WS1874, KS1879, KS1883, WS1885, KS1888, KS1892

Appears in MS1868 as ‘photographer & fancy repository’. MS1868 KS1869, WS1874, WS1885 and KS1888 refer to William Reeve; KS1879 and KS1883 refer to Hastings Reeve; KS1892, WS1892, KS1896 and KS1900 refer to William Hastings Reeve. It seems possible that more than one practitioner could be represented here.

London Road, Lowestoft

HN1863, HS1864, KS1865, MS1868, KS1869

A ‘Reynolds of Lowestoft’ carte survives with '1862' handwritten on the back. At that time his cartes were priced at 6/- per dozen. He is described as ‘artist & photographer’ in HS1863 and HN1864. His advertisement in HS1863 reads: ‘Before you have your Portrait taken, pay a visit to Reynolds' Photographic Saloon ... and inspect the Specimens which will be found the Best and Cheapest Photographs Either on Glass or Paper, that have yet been placed before the public, including the much admired Carte de Visites. Mr Reynolds still continues to produce those works of art in Coloured Photographs, which for artistic merit, brilliancy, and durability, stand unrivalled.’

The partners had evidently given it up by 28th February 1860, when it was damaged in a hurricane and referred to, in a subsequent 'Ipswich Journal' report, as 'the photographic studio, late of Messrs Rogers and Chapman'.
